Georgian Language Day in the Leiden University
On 14 April 2023, Leiden University hosted the conference dedicated to the Georgian Language. Chairman Fortuin and Ambassador Solomonia opened the session in which the main speakers delivered presentations on historical, practical and scientific aspects of the Georgian language. Among the invited guests, there were academic personnel and students of the University.
In his opening speech, Mr. Egbert Fortuin, Chairman of the Eurasian Studies marked the importance of the Georgian Language day for the Leiden University. It has been 10 years since the University conducts the courses on Georgian Language.
Ambassador Solomonia extended his gratitude to the Leiden University and spoke about historical importance of 14 April and the events that transpired in 1978. He saluted the bravery of people who stood up against the oppressive regime and protected their mother tongue. Ambassador also spoke about dire situation in the Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region where ethnic Georgians are denied to speak and study in their own language. The discriminative policy is under effective control of the Russian Federation whose leadership shall bear the responsibility of this grave human rights violation.
In the main part of the conference, speakers delivered presentations on the topics related to scientific, practical and historical side of the Georgian Language. Counsellor Huta Salia spoke about 1978 April demonstrations that took place in Georgia and its historical Background. English Student Patrick Noren, described his experience in learning the Georgian language and recent trip in Georgia, while Professor Jesse Schreur Wichers dedicated his presentation to one of the most prominent scholars of Georgian language, Niko Mari.
After the conference, the audience was invited for wine tasting hour.
